No Ugly Salty uses a non-GMO maltodextrin for a very specific reason: to ensure the drink is isotonic, so its high concentration of minerals can be rapidly absorbed by the body. Electrolytes with zero carbohydrate simply don’t absorb as efficiently.

The maltodextrin we use has been independently tested and is a low dextrose equivalent (DE) variant, meaning it digests and absorbs more slowly than high-DE sugars and doesn’t spike blood sugar. At <1 g of carbohydrate per 100 mL, it supports absorption without triggering insulin spikes.
